In December 2020, HAECO Hong Kong took home the “Smart Technology Grand Award” in the “CLP Smart Energy Award 2020” programme; the award recognises the company’s continuous efforts towards environmental sustainability.
The award citation noted two major green initiatives recently implemented by HAECO. The first is the replacement of the company’s existing air compressors with eco-friendly, oil-free air compressors that use integrated inverter technology and consume 50% less energy than traditional air compressors - so enhancing the energy efficiency of aircraft maintenance operations, while reducing environmental impact. The second initiative is the implementation of an energy-saving programme at HAECO that includes the replacement of freshwater-cooled chiller plants with an ultra-high efficiency hybrid power chiller plant, as well as the introduction of a phase-change material thermal energy storage system. The resulting estimated annual electricity saving of these initiatives is approximately 5.4 million kWh.
The annual CLP Smart Energy Awards recognise outstanding performance in energy management and the use of renewable energy and smart technology. The 2020 awards programme received more than 400 entries and 24 winning organisations have been honoured for their innovative energy-saving practices. Another 14 businesses and organisations received Renewable Energy Contribution Awards for supporting the development of renewable energy in Hong Kong.
